History

Redditch, the UK town where Clifford Springs is located, has a long history with spring making.

Through the years

Originally, Redditch, was known for its excellence in needle and fishhook manufacturing. Over time, this expertise expanded into general fine wire forming, and an entire infrastructure grew from it.
The first coiled spring was patented by R. Tradwell in 1873. It was a much easier spring to use and maintain. The first coil spring to be made from steel wire was used in an armchair, and its use in all sorts of objects exploded from there.
The Herbert Terry and Sons Spring Company, based in Redditch, became one of the biggest and best known spring makers in the world, partly due to its association with the anglepoise lamp, and partly as a key supplier to the UK military effort in WW2.
In 1946, Theodore Clifford was one of the post war workers who left Terry and set up on their own. His original spring manufacturing business has evolved, and grown, over time to become the Clifford Springs we know today, still owned and run by members of the Clifford family.
